A game is a structured type of play, normally undertaken for fun or entertainment, and at times used as an educational resource. Games are quite different from exercise, which is normally performed for monetary remuneration, and unlike art, which is generally an expression of philosophical or aesthetic elements. Chris Crawford is renowned as the father of the concept of game designing. His career spanned four decades from the late seventies to the early nineties. He designed games for children and educational institutions, before shifting to computer games and virtual reality. The game, like many of Crawford’s, deals with horror and suspense, involving a series of missions and puzzles, which are performed by using a variety of specialized devices, such as deduction, critical reasoning, pattern matching and association.
In the late eighties, however, it was apparent that there was room for improvement in the video game industry, and this led to the birth of what we know now as the RPG (role playing) genre. This was an evolution, as much as a revolution, of the game industry, taking RPG’s in new directions that had not been explored before. One such innovation was the introduction of ‘character generation’, where a player’s actions in a game would be influenced by the actions and history of the character he was playing. RPG’s became popular among hardcore fans, who could enjoy the role-playing quality of a game as their own living room, without having to go out into the real world.
After the success of RPG’s, a new genre was born, known as MUD (moderated user-created environments). This was a modification of the RPG concept, but instead of being played on a computer, the user was allowed to create characters and situations within the environment of the game, without having to be in the real world. Chris Crawford joined forces with programmers John Poole and Paul Taylor, to create a system called the World of Warcraft.
This was the birth of the first major publisher, Blizzard Entertainment, who now has franchises for every major genre imaginable, from RPG’s to sports to racing, MMORPG’s to massively multi-player online role-playing games (MMORPG) and the ever-popular WoW. As you can see, the roots of modern day gaming are in the ancient traditions of the game industry, with an ancient past still very much alive today. With the continued expansion of the video games industry, the future for RPG’s looks bright, with new possibilities coming into the industry every year.
